So many nonprofit organizations are concerned about fundraising and giving trends. Certainly, the economy and recent reports on giving trends justify their concerns. Although we saw unprecedented giving results during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. In fact, 2021 was the best giving year on record; but that level of giving has not continued.
Unfortunately, giving in 2023 is down across all sectors and continues to be negatively influenced by economic uncertainty and political unrest. Other factors that have influenced giving in the past few years include:
- Major changes in tax legislation in 2017
- Covid, natural disasters, and humanitarian crisis
- Economic factors – recession and above-average rates of inflation
- Changing norms and transparency with large gifts
- Disruption of supply chain and data availability
