Edvin is a Partner at Sax LLP and leads the firm’s national State and Local Tax practice. He brings nearly two decades of experience dedicated solely to state and jurisdictional tax matters (the State and Local Tax service line, or “SALT”, as it is commonly abbreviated).
At Sax, Edvin’s role is heavily focused on functioning as an ideal tax advisor to clients in the areas of multistate compliance, controversy, and all other technical matters including technical research and issuance of opinions on various tax matters that don’t have a clear technical disposition.
Prior to joining Sax, Edvin worked at firms ranging from regional powerhouses to the Big 4. He has provided his technical capability to clients operating in various industries including, but not limited to, manufacturing, retail, construction, transportation, legal, real estate, asset management, and biotech, amongst several others. He has served as a trusted advisor to companies ranging from small closely held entities to Fortune 500.
In addition to helping his clients maintain statutory compliance for various tax types, Edvin also focuses on developing and advising on efficient tax structures and operations within a complex state framework. This requires a deep understanding of state legislative and administrative processes and their impact on various entity types such as multi-tiered flowthroughs (e.g. pass-through entities), corporations, real estate insurance trusts, and insurance companies.
Edvin has spent most of his State and Local Tax career serving as a national resource for Big 4 offices as a State Jurisdictional Tax Lead (with a specialization in California tax matters) providing technical solutions and advice to the national offices. He has worked on a broad range of multistate matters including controversy (audit defense, protest, negotiation and settlement, and appeals), consulting, planning, and compliance – spanning the gamut of industries.
Since beginning his career in public accounting, Edvin has provided state tax controversy, consulting, and compliance services across several industries and for various entity types. He has also spent a considerable amount of time in his career advising on residency planning and defending residency controversy matters. Edvin has researched and written about a broad range of technical issues spanning income, property, and transactional taxes.
Before joining Sax LLP, Edvin worked at Deloitte, KPMG, Grant Thornton, and HCVT in the multistate group with a focus on controversy, consulting, and compliance matters for a diverse range of clients.
He is certified as a Public Accountant by the California Board of Accountancy. In his free time, he loves to spend time with his three children (ages 6 and under), cooking, gardening, reading, volunteering, and serving his alma mater as an Adjunct Professor in California State University, Fullerton’s Master of Science in Taxation program where he teaches Federal Tax Research and State and Local Taxation courses.
