July Sax Spotlight: Matthew Mareiniss and Susan Reed

In this month’s Sax Spotlight, we highlight the work ethic and dedication of Partner, Susan Reed, and Senior Associate, Matthew Mareiniss.

Matthew Mareiniss, CPA

This month, we are proud to shine our Sax Spotlight on Senior Associate, Matthew Mareiniss. Matt began his career at Sax as an A&A Associate in November of 2017 and was promoted to Senior Associate in July of 2019 due to his strong work ethic and productivity. He strives to never be complacent and looks forward to continuing to learn from the leaders of the firm.

What college did you attend? What was your major?

I attended Seton Hall University where I majored in Accounting.

Any continued education?  Credentials?

I received my Masters in Professional Accounting from Seton Hall University and earned my CPA license in 2018.

When did you start working at Sax?

I began my career at Sax in November of 2017 as an A&A Associate.

What is your current title?

I was promoted to Senior Associate in July of 2019.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities at Sax?  What do you specialize in?

On a day-to-day basis, I audit Not-for-Profit (NFP) and Real Estate entities as well as non-reporting work for the Real Estate niche.

What are a few things you have learned at Sax?

I believe that the hands-on learning I have experienced with the leaders of the firm and the training programs Sax holds have made a difference in my overall performance and client service.

Explain some of your biggest achievements while working at Sax.

Currently, my biggest achievements include earning my CPA license and being promoted to Senior Associate. I also find it an accomplishment to be a resource for newer associates.

Do you have a vision or goal for your career?

I would like to gain experience within each niche of the firm so that I can become a more well-rounded advisor to clients. I never want to be complacent in my abilities and want to continue to expand my knowledge as much as possible.  The fact that Sax holds consistent training programs and has many mentors I can turn to really helps me to continue to grow and learn.

Do you frequently speak at events or publish articles to demonstrate expertise?

I provide presentations to Finance Committees for not-for-profits that we service.

What volunteer work and/or charities do you participate in?

I have volunteered for Paterson Habitat for Humanity building homes for Paterson families in need.

Are there any other interesting facts about you outside of your work life?

I have a passion for music, and I am currently a singer in an alternative rock band. I also enjoy exercising, and recently took a trip to the Adirondacks where I hiked 26 miles and climbed Mount Marcy and Giant Mountain. Football is also another passion of mine, and I frequently participate in Fantasy Football leagues.


Susan Reed, CPA, CFP®

Please join us in shining our Sax Spotlight on Partner, Susan Reed. Sue began her career at Sax in 1998 and now serves as Partner in Charge of the firm’s Healthcare niche. She strives to build valuable relationships with her clients as their #1 advisor and is in constant communication with them to ensure that their needs are being met. Sue also serves as a valuable mentor and resource to the younger generations of the firm and finds it a very rewarding part of her role.

What college did you attend? What was your major?

I attended Montclair State University where I majored in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.

Any continued education?  Credentials?

About 10 years after earning my CPA, I attended Fairleigh Dickenson University to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and expand my knowledge to better serve my clients from both an accounting and financial perspective.

When did you start working at Sax?

I began working at Sax in 1998 as a Supervisor in the firm’s Accounting and Auditing (A&A) Department.

What is your current title?

I am currently the Partner in Charge of the firm’s Healthcare niche.

What are your day-to-day responsibilities at Sax?  What do you specialize in?

I am in constant communication with my clients to best understand their needs and to identify any challenges they may be facing. I also work with my staff to ensure work is being completed accurately and timely, and that we are providing client service that aligns with the firm’s high standard.  I also work to ensure I am a resource to newer associates.

What are a few things you have learned at Sax?

I have learned the importance of teamwork to best showcase the many talents within the firm. As a Partner, I find it very rewarding to help team members develop their talents and strengths.

My biggest achievement at Sax was becoming Partner in Charge of the firm’s Healthcare niche.

Explain some of your biggest achievements in life.

Some of my biggest achievements include earning my CPA and CFP certifications. I believe that earning these certifications has made a difference in expanding my knowledge and better serving my clients.

Do you have a vision or goal for your career?

I am proud that I have met the goals I have set for myself in my career and my focus now is to continue to demonstrate my expertise and bring value to my client relationships.  My aim is to also positively mold our team members so that they can continue the culture of Sax as trusted advisors to those we serve.

Do you frequently speak at events or publish articles to demonstrate expertise?

I frequently speak on informational webinars for the business community, write articles, and serve on panels for clients regarding a variety of Healthcare related topics.

What volunteer work and/or charities do you participate in?

I currently serve as a Board Member for St. Joseph’s Hospital and played a significant role in the Dress for Success event launch in New Jersey. I also enjoy participating in the firm’s 4 Miler event benefitting the pediatric patients of St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital.

Are there any other interesting facts about you outside of your work life?

Every day, I love to solve the New York Times crossword puzzle. I am also a big baseball fan and love to follow the New York Yankees. When the weather is nice, I love to go kayaking and boating with my family.
