Join the Webinar: The Giving Trends Report and Setting Your Organization Up for Success in 2025

So many nonprofit organizations are concerned about fundraising and giving trends. Certainly, the economy and recent reports on giving trends justify their concerns.   Although we saw unprecedented giving results during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. In fact, 2021 was the best giving year on record; but that level of giving has not continued.

Unfortunately,  giving in 2023 is down across all sectors and continues to be negatively influenced by economic uncertainty and political unrest. Other factors that have influenced giving in the past few years include:

  • Major changes in tax legislation in 2017
  • Covid, natural disasters, and humanitarian crisis
  • Economic factors – recession and above-average rates of inflation
  • Changing norms and transparency with large gifts
  • Disruption of supply chain and data availability

In a recent report by Giving USA, the authors noted that although giving reached $557 billion in 2023, giving did not outpace inflation. The report also provided a realistic and practical view of 2023’s giving trends, including where the giving is coming from and to whom it is going.

Join SAX’s nonprofit experts on October 16 from 10:00 – 11:00 AM EST as they walk you through the top findings from the Giving USA report and provide strategies to help your organization make the best choices about your fundraising efforts and resources.

Some key takeaways from the report include:

  1. Individual giving is down, and although individual donations still make up the lion’s share of all giving, it will be extremely important to retain current individual donors.
  2. Foundation giving has grown from 6% to nearly 20% of all giving. This growth is expected to continue over the past two years, even when adjusted for inflation.
  3. Bequests grew in 2023 and now account for 10% of total giving; a planned giving program will be important going forward.
  4. Giving to religious organizations has dropped significantly from 63% in 1983 to 24% in 2023; where giving to Human Services increased from 6% in 1983 to 14% in 2023
  5. Most nonprofit subsectors have slowly recovered their donation levels from the pandemic; a few have not.
